Fall Dates for School
Governor Jim Justice proclaimed that today, September 22, is School Service Personnel Day. We know that every day is a day to celebrate our dedicated service personnel of Pocahontas County Schools. We are blessed to have our service personnel who provide extra care to students making sure that they arrive safely to school and home, have hot meals to nourish their bodies, provide additional academic support, have a clean and welcoming school environment, and are greeted with a smile. Thank you for all that you do and for being part of the Pocahontas County Schools Team!

Attention Parents! Students who took the West Virginia General Summative Assessment in spring 2023 received an email at their K12 student email account containing a link to an individual student video score report. Although students are also receiving their printed score reports to bring home, the West Virginia Department of Education is including a video report designed to be more engaging for students and their parents/guardians. If a primary email was on file for a parent/guardian, they will receive the link via email as well. Simply copy and paste the secure link found in the email to your browser and enter the date of birth for your child to access the video score report customized specifically for them. If you have any difficulty accessing the report, please contact your student’s school for assistance.

Social media has become an integral part of our lives. However, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers that come with it, especially for children. There are several dangers to be aware of including cyberbullying, online predators, sharing too much information, false marketing, and dangerous viral trends. We urge all parents to talk to their children about the potential dangers of social media and how to stay safe while using it. Encourage them to use social media responsibly and respectfully. It's also important to set rules and guidelines for social media usage at home. Visit our technology page to for resources and guides for parents in the digital age! https://boe.pocahontas.k12.wv.us/page/technology Let's work together to keep our children safe on social media!

POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS PROVIDE MEALS TO STUDENTS AT NO COST Marlinton, W.Va. - Students in Pocahontas County will have the opportunity to eat a no-cost breakfast and lunch at school through the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program. The CEP was enacted as a result of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act and provides universal meal service to children in high-poverty areas. This is the fourth year for the option. The CEP serves as an alternative to collecting, approving and verifying household eligibility applications for free- and reduced-price eligible students in high-poverty Local Education Agencies (LEAs). If at least 40 percent of a school’s student population is directly certified for free meal benefits, the entire school qualifies for the option. “I am proud that Pocahontas County Schools will be participating in the CEP program to help meet a crucial need for many students in our county,” said Lynne Bostic, Superintendent of Pocahontas County Schools. “We know academic achievement increases when our students are well-fed and ready to learn, and we must provide secure and reliable access to nutritious meals, so all students have a chance to achieve at the highest level possible.” Pocahontas County expects to have 5 schools participate in the CEP. The program allows the school system to feed nearly 909 students each day. The 2017 Feeding America: Map the Meal Gap data reports high levels of food insecurity and hunger across the country. In West Virginia, more than 14 percent of residents, and over 79,000 children, live in food insecure households. For more information, contact ……. I hope everyone will have a wonderful Independence Day. I am Lynne Roth Bostic, and it is an honor to be your new Superintendent of Pocahontas County Schools. I was awarded the opportunity to work with, and support, the best of West Virginia when Mr. Terrence Beam resigned to join Nicholas County Schools as their new Superintendent. For the past three years, I have been your Director of Federal Programs as well as Curriculum and Instruction. I aim to be the type of leader that John Quincy Adams defines, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” How will we do that? We will continue to build professional learning communities for all staff, support our instructional leaders at each of our five schools, and create an insight group representing all stakeholders including staff, parents, community members, and businesses. I also plan to reach out to our local organizations, tell our story, and invite other staff to join me in this endeavor. We are doing great things in Pocahontas County Schools. If you would like us to attend your local meeting, please contact me. Working together, we will make a difference in the future of Pocahontas County.
