About Us

Pocahontas County Schools (PCS) is geographically the 3rd largest district in WV and the most rural school district east of the Mississippi. Nestled in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains, this scenic region offers a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re hiking through the lush trails of the Monongahela National Forest, skiing down the slopes of Snowshoe Mountain, or exploring the fascinating Green Bank Observatory, there’s something for everyone. Pocahontas County is also steeped in history, with charming towns like Marlinton and historic sites such as the Cass Scenic Railroad.

The location of our district makes us well suited for unique programs such as Nature’s Mountain Classroom (NMC). An innovative educational program designed to immerse students in outdoor adventures while integrating their standard curriculum. The program aims to expose third through twelfth graders to activities like skiing, hiking, biking, and kayaking in the beautiful landscapes of Pocahontas County.

Our schools also benefit from active community involvement. Parents, family members and community members alike are the foundational element to ensuring our schools thrive. Their involvement includes volunteering, planning/orchestrating school events, coaching sports teams, and providing additional resources and support to students and staff

We offer various extracurricular activities to support the holistic development of students. Through partnership with Pocahontas County Parks and Recreation, our students are able to participate in baseball/softball, soccer, football, basketball and more. The county also has a thriving theatre program as well as a competitive robotics group at PCHS. High school students have a robust selection of clubs including FFA, R.A.Z.E., The Tribe and many more.

We equip our schools with a variety of technology such as 1:1 devices for students, a large selection of educational software, and interactive touch panels in classrooms. Thanks to our high-speed fiber internet, we are able to offer a number of virtual class options to our high school students as well.

PCS is home to a highly successful mathematics program, with students achieving some of the highest math scores in the state. We serve approximately 916 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Our district is known for its small class sizes, with a student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1, allowing for personalized attention and a supportive learning environment.

Pocahontas county has 5 outstanding schools that are dedicated to fostering academic excellence and personal growth among students. We boast a graduation rate higher than the state average and 48% of our graduates attend college after high school.

Pocahontas County Schools are committed to providing a high-quality education in a nurturing and engaging environment, preparing students for future success

Superintendent's Message

It is an honor to serve as the Superintendent of Pocahontas County Schools. I was awarded the job of superintendent in 2022 after serving three years as the Director of Federal Programs as well as Curriculum and Instruction for PCS.

I aim to be the type of leader that John Quincy Adams defines, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” How will we do that? We will continue to build professional learning communities for all staff, support our instructional leaders at each of our five schools, and create an insight group representing all stakeholders including staff, parents, community members, and businesses.

Working together, we will make a difference in the future of Pocahontas County
