Upon consideration of the predicted wintry conditions and weather alerts we have received for tomorrow; it has been decided that all Pocahontas County Schools will operate on a 3-hour delay for Tuesday, January 9, 2024.
Due to the winter weather, Pocahontas County Schools will operate on a three-hour delay on Monday, January 8, 2024.
Due to schools closing today, the Pocahontas County Board of Education's December 19 Board Meeting will be moved to the Board Office located at 404 Old Buckeye Road, Buckeye, WV. The meeting will begin at 5 pm instead of 4:45. The Local School Improvement Council Meeting presentation from Hillsboro Elementary School will be rescheduled.

Congratulations to three outstanding teachers! Stephanie Burns, Erin Murphy, and Melissa Walker were nominated for Outstanding Teachers of Reading awards at the 2023 West Virginia Reading Association Conference in November. Mrs. Burns is an instructional coach for Pocahontas County Schools, Ms. Murphy teaches English Language Arts at Marlinton Middle, and Melissa Walker teaches fifth grade at Marlinton Elementary School.

November 13-17 is National Education Week and it is a time to be thankful for all those who work with students and families. November has been filled with snow, rain, warm weather, and freezing temperatures. We all realize that winter is coming and with that, students will be wishing for snow days! Governor Jim Justice proclaimed that today, September 22, is School Service Personnel Day. We know that every day is a day to celebrate our dedicated service personnel of Pocahontas County Schools. We are blessed to have our service personnel who provide extra care to students making sure that they arrive safely to school and home, have hot meals to nourish their bodies, provide additional academic support, have a clean and welcoming school environment, and are greeted with a smile.

Students who took the West Virginia General Summative Assessment in spring 2023 received an email at their K12 student email account containing a link to an individual student video score report. Although students are also receiving their printed score reports to bring home, the West Virginia Department of Education is including a video report designed to be more engaging for students and their parents/guardians. If a primary email was on file for a parent/guardian, they will receive the link via email as well. Simply copy and paste the secure link found in the email to your browser and enter the date of birth for your child to access the video score report customized specifically for them. If you have any difficulty accessing the report, please contact your student’s school for assistance.
Social media has become an integral part of our lives. However, it is important to be aware of the potential dangers that come with it, especially for children. There are several dangers to be aware of including cyberbullying, online predators, sharing too much information, false marketing, and dangerous viral trends.
We urge all parents to talk to their children about the potential dangers of social media and how to stay safe while using it. Encourage them to use social media responsibly and respectfully. It's also important to set rules and guidelines for social media usage at home.
