Universal Preschool Program

Pre-Kindergarten is an early childhood development program which provides an active learning environment. Children attend regular sessions taught by a certified preschool teacher who is supported by an assistant teacher or aide. The preschool program in Pocahontas County offers a school-based experience with limited spots available. It runs four full days each week and follows the county school calendar. The Pocahontas County School District works in collaboration with Head Start to provide additional parent and child supports. To be eligible, children must be 4 years old by July 1, unless they have an IEP indicating developmental delays in two or more areas.

Preschool Makes A Difference!

According to studies from MIT and the Learning Policy institute, students who attend Preschool Programs are:

  • less likely to be identified as having special needs or to be held back in elementary school than children who did not attend preschool

  • more likely to graduate high school

  • more likely to take the SAT

  • more likely to enroll in college

  • less likely to experience juvenile incarceration.
